Can diabetics drink alcohol-free beer?

By Alex Stewart · Updated

Quick answerDiabetes UK lists alcohol-free beer as an option, but says it still has sugars and carbs that will raise blood sugar, so check the label and count the carbs. It warns against "diabetic" low-sugar beers, which can be stronger. If you take insulin or other diabetes medicine, ask your care team.

What Diabetes UK says

Choose alcohol-free beers, wines and spirits, but remember they contain sugars and carbs. Beers will initially raise blood sugar. Avoid "low-sugar" diabetic beers, which may have less sugar but more alcohol. Water is still the best drink, and checking labels for the lowest sugar is the practical rule.

Why alcohol-free helps

Diabetes UK says alcohol makes hypos more likely, especially on insulin or sulphonylureas, and the risk can last 24 hours. Alcohol-free beer avoids most of that alcohol.
